Mad Men Clothing Line- To Sell Or Not To Sell?

The Mad Men series has quicklyhad us all glued to our TV screens so much so that the only thing left to do was for AMC to launch a clothing range. Unsurprisingly, the show's costume designer, Janie Bryant, has decided to give the masses what they want, by designing a few pieces inspired by the cast's sartorial wardrobes. Her first offering is a limited-edition grey sharkskin 'Mad Men' suit, which she has designed for Brooks Brothers and became available as of yesterday at the price of $998. Fear not ladies, as Bryant has stated that she also plans to add evening gowns, 'rear-enhancing sheaths', office wear and men's accessories to the line at some point in the near future.

As to the question of whether or not the line will actually sell, industry insiders have intimated that the line will do well providing some conditions are adhered to. Lauretta Roberts, a trend forecaster at WGSN has expressed what a fine line it is that Bryant is walking. She said, "If it's 'in the style of', or 'inspired by' [the show] then yes, it could well do okay, but no one wants to look like they're going out in costume." Clare Coulson, fashion features director at Harper's Bazaar, however, is of the view that, "visually the whole package is so sumptuous. I think people will buy the spin-offs. People really identify with that era because it's very feminine and people feel nostalgic about it." We are in agreement. We love the figure fixing designs, the eye-popping colours and above all, we love the fact that the 'Mad Men' outfits always look wearable which in turn makes them flattering. Enough said. Roll on the 'sheaths', we can't wait!

This line could definitely do well. Mad Men has such a great following and some really fabulous fashion. However, like Lauretta Roberts said, it's important that the styles are just influenced by the show but don't completely transform people into 1960's advertising exec-looking characters!
