Thursday saw the unveiling of Sidewalk Catwalk, a designer-centric public-art installation by the Fashion Center Business Improvement District featuring thirty two top designers, Michael Kors and Donna Karan just to name a few. Each designer was handed a fiberglass mannequin and left to fashion it as they saw fit and work their mannequin magic. Fashion Center president Barbara Randall presented the finished creations at Herald Square and said she saw the project as an opportunity "for the designers to present themselves artistically rather than commercially." This was certainly the case for Prabal Gurung who made his mannequin a tribute to the late fashion genius Alexander McQueen. If your passing by or interested to see the artistic flair of the designers, the mannequins will be on display in the Garment District until September 3rd. After this date they will be sold at auction with proceeds benefitting Materials for the Arts.
