In The Studio With: Madeleine Thompson

Picture the girl you know who can do everything. That's Madeleine Thompson, whose namesake knitwear and cashmere line is making its US debut in a few weeks. Of course, this comes after she earned a law degree from London's Durham University, worked as a buyer for Lane Crawford and successfully started her own jewellery brand. Kate Moss and Renee Zellweger are fans - and now the aforementioned clothing business, which Thompson launched in 2007, has Sienna Miller and Agyness Deyn looking even more stylish.

That's quite a fan list for age 28, but her chic pieces are perfect for busy women, and that deserves a reward. With Thompson's friend Poppy Delevigne modelling for her Fall '09 lookbook, we're sure there's even more buzz to come for this style queen.

But for right now, let's see what the designer has to say about Nicole Richie, Kanye West and her fabulous new digs.

Where's your studio?
I have just moved to my new house! It's this amazing mews house just off Ladbroke Grove (in Notting Hill, London). My studio is on the ground floor. It's this amazing space with lots of light and battered wooden floors and exposed brick walls – I am obsessed with it.

Who do you design for?
I think ultimately I design for myself…just in that every piece that I make is something that I totally adore and am looking for in my own life. I guess in a more general sense I am designing for that lady who wants to make each piece of clothing she wears her own. It's not about branding or labels – it's how you want to look yourself and how you decide to wear it. I definitely think I design for people who are running around doing things and living her life.

Who's your ideal customer or celeb client?
I definitely think I design for people who are running around doing things and living their lives. I love the way Kate Bosworth wears clothes. She always looks very chic. I also love Nicole Ritchie's luxe-boho vibe. She wears it very well.

When do you feel most inspired to work?
It can be any time of day at all. Once I start there is no stopping me. You can be talking to me and I can't even hear you.

When is the worst time to work?
It's hard to work when there is a deadline or a huge amount of pressure…although in some cases it's quite inspirational! When I am very tired it can get quite difficult.

What's on your iPod in the studio?
Everything and anything. I can go from Neil Young to hip-hop very happily. At the moment I'm quite loving Kanye West's new album…

When is the day over?
For me the day is over when I get everything done. And that is often pretty late! I wouldn't change anything for the world though; I'm the luckiest girl ever.
