The Plus Size Argument Continues - And Karl Is On Side Size Zero

We've seen a rise in the trend of industry professionals battling the way for curvier models and protesting against the size zero standard that is deemed normal at the moment, however one of the biggest names in fashion, Mr Karl Lagerfeld himself, has openly criticised the recent change.

While Glamour magazine have been keeping to their promise of showing more plus-size models, and German magazine Brigette announced last week that they will stop using uber-thin models from now on, Mr Lagerfeld insisted that the runway should be reserved for those thinner than the average woman. "No one wants to see curvy women," he told Focus magazine, adding "You've got fat mothers with their bags of chips sitting in front of the television and saying that thin models are ugly".

These recent comments might mark the beginning of the end for the pro plus-size industry debate, as ironically not so long ago, Lagerfeld chose plus-size icon Beth Ditto to perform at the Fendi party last season. Ditto herself admits, “I know that one year Karl Lagerfeld was refusing to make clothes for women of a certain size, and the next year he was asking me to play the Fendi party". Always one to spark a trend, maybe Karl's support to thin models will throw a spanner in the works of all those who fought for 'normal sized' girls on the catwalk, and allow more professionals to air their opinions. The debate continues...

Estrella Archs Shakes Off The Ungaro Critics

After suffering a rather brutal set of critique following the SS10 Emanuel Ungaro show that she co-designed with Lindsay Lohan, it must have taken courage for Estrella Archs to hold her head high once more, and show her eponymous collection in Paris on Friday. Held in a parking garage in the chic Marais district, the collection was all together more grown up, with a minimalistic edge, sheer fabrics and soft drapery. Meanwhile, rumours from behind the scenes at Ungaro with Lindsay didn't sound too promising, as The Times newspaper reported - ‘[Lohan] picked up a black and white scarf and tied it around her head, then replaced it with a black one, and then clumsily stuck a red sequin-covered heart to the side of her head while a team of designers watched her...’ After proving herself under her namesake collection to be more than adequate as a designer alone, we're not sure how long Ungaro will be running under a design partnership.

In The Studio With: Katy Rodriguez

To check whether a designer is still buzz-worthy, all you need to do is check the client list. If it includes Chloe Sevigny, Anne Hathaway, Lisa Love and Marisa Tomei, then there's a pretty good chance the label is still relevant. That's why we're sure San Francisco native Katy Rodriguez will stay in the pages of Vogue for awhile.

As if it wasn't enough that Rodriguez co-founded the popular vintage shop Resurrection in 1996, she launched her own line in 2005 and was promptly selected for Gen Art's Fresh Faces. Now, you can find her intricate and unconventionally feminine pieces in stores like Browns, Opening Ceremony and Satine.

This week, Rodriguez talks Whole Foods rejuvenation, technical difficulties and keeping up the team spirit.

French Vogue's Blackface Editorial Raises Eyebrows

It's ironic timing that, just after the issue of race came up at London Fashion Week with PPQ staging an all-black-model runway show, French Vogue is catching heat for a controversial photo shoot with Lara Stone. A 14-page spread for the October issue shows the Dutch model in blackface.

The spread praises Stone for pushing a "radical break with the wave of anorexic models", but as Jezebel points out, that compliment is hard to take when another issue seems to be so blatantly overlooked. October's issue is dedicated to supermodels, and no black models made the cut.

So you be the jury: Did this spread go too far, or is it just another way to push boundaries?

Christian Louboutin Picks A Makeover Subject

Turning 50 this year means that Barbie has gotten plenty of designer upgrades, and Christian Louboutin is the latest to update Barbie's wardrobe. He's releasing three specially designed dolls over the next few months, including one doll to be released for the Cannes Film Festival.

But Louboutin is taking his work a step further and giving Barbie a new silhouette. Specifically: "He found her ankles were too fat," according a company spokeswoman. She says the new dolls are "completely wild" and will even come with their own mini Louboutin boxes for the dolls' shoes.
