Rihanna is officially back and is on the promotional trail for her new album 'Rated R'. This week, the singer performed in this white shoulder padded white blazer with gold detail on ABC's 'Good Morning America' in New York.
We're crushing over Rihanna's unique Stephane Rolland mermaid gown from the Glamour Women of the Year Awards last week - just like we're happy to see her out and about in Rick Owens and looks from other, less-than-expected designers. Now, the pop princess has revealed that her allegiance to edgy designers is calculated.
"In the past few months, I’ve done a lot of research in the fashion world because I wanted to work with a bunch of designers that are kinda underground, people who aren’t the obvious," she said to Grazia. "I found this guy Alexander Voltaire – his stuff is just so amazing, the colours are really beautiful and feminine but the structure is really strong, which I love."
Added Rihanna: "My style is very edgy, very daring. I like to take risks – I hate to do the obvious. Style is all about creativity so I like to put things together in my own way."
Doing it her own way is something we've come to expect from Rihanna, and no one can keep us guessing like her. Now, if we could only get her to do a music video with Gaga...
Rihanna ditched her usual leather clad dark look in favour of this interesting ivory floor length gown at Glamour Magazine 2009 Women of the Year Awards at the Carnegie Hall in New York yesterday
Giuseppe Zanotti, the shoe maker to the stars, was awarded the title of Shoewear Designer Of The Year by Footwear News, the sister publication to online fashion bible, WWD. The designer, whose career spans over two decades, fought off stiff competition to walk off with the award.
Having now joined the ranks of Manolo Blahnik, who has also received the award in past, Zanotti and his legions of celebrity fans such as Blake Lively,Kylie Minogue, Beyonce and Rihanna, amongst others, will be ecstatic at the thought that his sculpted, awe-inspiring, embellished and embroidered artwork-esque designs are worthy of the accolade.
There's nothing like great lingerie to make a girl feel good, so why keep it hidden away? Underwear worn as outerwear has become a suprising emerging trend - from demure bras peeping from prim cardigans in the style of Chloe Sevigny, to sheer, sexy and exposed blouses and sequinned hotpants. For those of you who are feeling brave a la Rihanna, show some flesh with the sheer trend, or sport a lacy bra worn underneath a blazer for a smouldering night out. Taylor Momsen, Lindsay Lohan and Mischa Barton have all been spotted out and about flaunting their suspenders with pride - follow suit for a youthful, punky take on the trend.
If over-exposure is out of your comfort zone, follow the lead from the SS10 catwalks of Danielle Scutt, Giles and Dolce and Gabbana, with corset inspired bustiers and dresses, or for a completely subtle take on the lingerie trend, start with some lace up killer heels. Our favourite way to wear lingerie in daytime hours? The Stella lace detail slip - let it poke out from underneath a mannish blazer for a cheeky nod to sensual dressing. Spring has never been so sexy...
The term 'real-human' conjures up images of a laid-back and down to earth individual and although there is nothing to say that Rihanna is anything but that behind closed doors, on the face of it, the achingly cool 22 year-old has upped the style stakes in recent months; so much so that she could soon be giving Lady Gaga a run for her money for the title of most fashion forward pop starlet.
Currently a permanent fixture on the front rows at Paris Fashion Week accompanied by her stylist Mariel Haenn, Rihanna has pulled out all the stops with her enviable wardrobe of theatrical, edgy and daring outfits including sexy cut out bandage dresses, over the knee boots teamed with an oversized blazer, though with no trousers or tights underneath, and high-neck mini dresses with sheer horizontal panelling.
Jimmy Choo Black Suede 'Hilde' Thigh High Boots $956
Perforated Thigh High Boots Stella McCartney £715
Thigh-high boots may have been the most unexpected trend to stick around throughout AW09, but after being flaunted by the likes of Rihanna, Madonna, Blake Lively and even Stella McCartney herself, we’re sure the warming winter boots are here to stay.
Wear with a cosy sweater dress, underneath a chic black coat a la Carine, or vamp it up with a rocky biker jacket and short shorts to get the Alice Dellal effect. There’s the classic options – thigh high, leather and heeled, or comfy suede flats – or if you’re feeling fierce like Rihanna, try the perforated Stella McCartney’s (faux leather, naturally), Hussein Chalayan's strapped pair or Topshop’s very own lace up, hiker style boots.
The catwalks of SS10 focussed entirely on the legs, with enough thigh-skimming hemlines to scare any hibernating pins, so although Spring may seem the time to dust off those legs in preparation for Summer – weather permitting – we feel it might be somewhat more sensible to invest in a good pair of thigh highs to keep those legs warm come next year.
