How Tom Ford Took Over Hollywood

As Tom Ford's movie debut, A Single Man, continues to simultaneously win accolade and awards while silencing critics, it's no surprise that the designer-turned-filmmaker is starting to revel in the success the film has garnered. In fact, as the cinema release date of the 12th February 2010 looms, the rumour mill has begun to spin into overdrive with talk that Ford could very well scoop an Oscar for either his writing, producing or directing efforts on the film.

The movie, follows lead character George Falconer, played by Colin Firth - an English man teaching in LA in the early 1960s - in the last days of his life, after his partner dies in a car accident. It is said to be very loosely based on Ford's own life, especially as Falconer is the surname of his first boyfriend, and his fox terriers appear in the film, as does Richard Buckley, his long-term partner of 23 years, in a cameo role.

The movie is decribed as layered and deep (both in heart and soul), which could arguably be seen as Ford's attempt to show that he is finally in touch with his more spiritual side as opposed to being ruled by material aesthetics, which was the status quo when he was growing up. "As a child, she [my mother] always thought I was horrible and heartless and selfish and spoiled, because I was very obsessed with material things that weren't spiritual," Ford said. "What people looked like was often more important to me than what they wore. It was only later in my life that I realised she was right."

Tom Ford's 'A Single Man' Up For Three Golden Globes

The Golden Globe nominations are officially out, and though there's no documentary category to give 'The September Issue' or 'Valentino: The Last Emperor' any nods, Tom Ford's 'A Single Man' earned three nominations. Colin Firth is up for Best Actor in a Drama, and his counterpart Julianne Moore could get Best Supporting Actress in a Drama. Ford himself didn't get a nomination for directing, but the movie's score is up for an award.

So. Moving on to the Golden Globe ceremony itself, can we expect to see Ms Moore in a custom Tom Ford dress again? Because that definitely would be award-worthy.

Tom Ford: Designer, Movie Maker And Financier

Tom Ford, the usually fiercely guarded designer-come--movie maker, has recently opened up in an interview with the New York Times about how people see him and how he was forced to finance his movie debut, A Single Man. Having described himself as 'a product', he explained that others didn't always see him that way. "I had a friend once whom I've known for 15 years who said, 'I've always thought of you as a beautiful black lacquered box with a platinum handle from the 1920s, but I never knew there was anything inside the box.' I was, like, 'You've been my friend, and you did not know there was anything more than the surface?"

Tom Ford Provides Rare Insight Into His Life: Now, Life After Gucci And Having A Mid-Life Crisis

When most people think of the glossy brand that is Gucci, the name Tom Ford springs to mind. Having taken over as creative director for the brand, which was on the brink of bankruptcy, in 1994, he managed to turn things around with such aplomb that a mere two years later sales had increased by 90 percent. From there he took on YSL, which had been acquired by Gucci and continued to successfully run both until 2004, when he parted ways with the Gucci following a slight disagreement with the CEO, Domenico de Sole.

Of course, being Tom Ford, an eponymous line was the next natural option: he offered us sunglasses, perfumes and beauty products. If that wasn't enough, his recent foray into film directing, 'A Single Man', proved to be a hit when it premiered at the 66th Venice International Film Festival back in September. With all these achievements, we are rather surprised that the perpetually well dressed designer is planning to go back to his first love of designing womenswear as early as next season.

In an interview with W magazine, he opens up on his past, present and future, so of course we had to share the highlights with you.
