The New Season Skirt: It's Downwards From Here

Fashion compromises don't usually work. Take the kitten heel for example. It doesn't have the transformative superpowers of a killer heel, nor does it have the chic quality of the ballet pump. The midi-skirt, on the other hand, is one compromise that works.

After half a decade of thigh skimming dresses and a general obsession with showing skin, we're all over the mini. Even Balmain has moved on and considering that the brand has always been amongst the big supporters of all things mini, that's a big deal. The maxi has also served it's time, especially after the whole boho trend that never really went away, so the midi is the perfect balance.

It's been around for a while. Marc Jacobs was amongst the first to resurrect it back in 2010 with the Louis Vuitton fall show and ever since, everyone from Victoria Beckham to Dries Van Noten have championed the length. At Burberry this season it was all about showing the style on mixed fabrics like plaids and tweeds and Sarah Burton opted for tartan and leather on skirts and also tapped into the length on coats with strong cinched waists at McQ.

What these brands showed is that the midi length doesn't need to be stuffy. Granted, it's one of those trends that will catch on in the mainstream amongst the more mature woman, aka the women that still have money to splurge during this recession, but there are enough reworked pieces to keep everyone happy.

It was this image of Caroline Issa that convinced me ad fellow editors like Giovanna Battaglia, Taylor Tomasi Hill and Shala Monroque show just how versatile it is. So how to style it? Well if you're going for a polished look I'd do like Ashley Olsen and tuck your top in. As well as emphasising the waist, it also helps elongate the body, which, I'm sure, is music to the ears of anyone that doesn't have model length legs. For a more casual day look this season, team it with thick wool tights, hard wearing ankle boots, knitwear and a biker jacket to give it a tough edge.

If you're still undecided, just give it go. While it has very much been the maxi's underrated sister, the midi has slowly been gaining traction over the past few years so you can be rest assured that it'll have staying power.

From left: Shorts, £35, ASOS Africa; Shirt dress, £365, MSGM; Trousers, £445, MSGM

The weather may still be on the bad side despite it being June but that shouldn't stop you from fully embracing the key S/S12 trends. One of my favourites for S/S12 is the tropical prints that Joseph Altuzarra pioneered in New York and Stella McCartney also embraced in Paris.

While the style may seem a bit daunting at first, there's so many ways to incorporate it into your wardrobe without it feeling overwhelming. Follow Yasmin Sewell by limiting the print to one piece like on a pair of ASOS Africa printed shorts. If you're willing to the whole nine yards, follow Altuzarra's lead by sporting it head-to-toe on a jumpsuit or on a trouser suit.

Rate or Slate: Kate Bosworth In Altuzarra At The CFDA Awards

Kate Bosworth always kills it on the red carpet and last night was no different. To attend the CFDA Awards the actress chose one of the statement Fall 2012 Altuzarra dresses but kept everything else classic and simple, particularly with her simple black heels and clutch bag and no jewellery.

What do you think of her look?

2012 Met Gala: Round-Up Of The Best Dressed

Anticipation for this year's Met Gala was high and the event definitely didn't disappoint. While it's true, there were several disappointing looks from people like Coco Rocha and Jessica Chastain, the majority of the looks were really strong and it was really good to see people research and commit to this year's Schiaparelli theme.

The above is a round-up of my favourite looks. Regular readers will know that I was on the dubious side about Joseph Altuzarra teaming up with Lana Del Rey but I was pleasantly surprised by the results. Her dress, along with her new dark hair, looked beautiful and so did Carey Mulligan in her golden Prada creation. As an Olsen fan, I'm generally impressed by anything either twin turns up in and last night was no different. The black dress from The Row that Mary-Kate Olsen was classically simple but still powerful.

Which outfit is your favourite?

Joseph Altuzarra's J. Crew Collaboration Fails To Excite

Earlier on this month J. Crew confirmed that they had decided to team up with the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund winners and runners up for the second year in a row and as you will recall, Joseph Altuzarra confirmed that he was working with them on a collaboration too. Like everyone else, being a fan of his mainline I was really interesting to see what he would come up with and now the final images of the complete collaboration are here.

Inspired by 'Brigitte Bardot in Saint-Tropez and French preppy style', the collection features a several gingham dresses, Breton tops with holes (not quite sure why) and coloured wedges. While there's nothing particularly wrong with the collection - the Breton tops and dresses will definitely make good wardrobe basics - there wasn't much that stood out about either. Nothing about the collection seems to correlate with his mainline at all.

Will you buy something from the collection when it drops online on April 19?

Get Excited: Altuzarra For J.Crew Capsule Collection Confirmed

Last month rumours started circulating that CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund winner Jospeph Altuzarra is working on a capsule collection with J. Crew along with runners up Pamela Love and Creatures of the Wind. The news didn't come as surprise. Back in 2010, the high street retailer announced that they would work with the award recipients of that that year - who were Prabal Gurung, Eddie Borgo and Billy Reid - on capsule collections and today Altuzarra confirmed that the reports are true.

'So we worked on a collaboration which I think will be out in a few weeks,' he told Fashionista. 'It was a really interesting project because it was like a conflation of their language — or of their world — [and] of our world and putting it together.” As designer-high-street partnerships go, this is one I'm definitely looking forward to get my hands on. Joseph Altuzarra Can Do No Wrong

Joeseph Altuzarra is undoubtedly one of the most exciting designers on the New York Fashion Week calendar. Anything he touches turns to gold. As you will recall, his fur lined parka jackets sold out in just one day on Net-A-Porter and last season he led the pack with his sexy black leather ensembles and dramatic prints.

This season was different. The prints were there but came in red, white and orange styles that were secondary to the outerwear and gypsy details that dominated the show. Jackets came with in navy with gold buttons that were reminiscent of the ones Christopher Bailey sent down the runway at Burberry for Fall 2010. The military theme also popped up on trousers that often came tucked into over-the-knee length black leather bots or on black A-line skirts. Coins appeared on everything from leather obi belts styled over chunky knit tops to along the necklines of black long sleeve tops that were subtly accentuated on the shoulders.

It wouldn't be an Altuzarra show without sexy appeal and this season it came across on black jackets that were beautiful;y cut against the body or on some styles that were nipped in and then tapered out from the waist teamed with a high waisted skirt with a slit that showed off the over-the-knee length leather boots underneath. Dresses were also dramatic and powerful, especially one that came with a sexy V-neck with accentuated shoulders.

As the collection progressed he introduced more textures particularly by layering full stoles over strong heavyweight outerwear teamed with pieces like a pair of suede trousers.

Quote Me: Joseph Altuzarra Designs For Trendy Middle Aged Women

I'm not trying to reinvent the wheel. I wanted to create clothes for women in their forties and fifties and sixties who have careers and are sexy and don’t want to look like grandmothers.

He told Forbes.
