Currently Loving: Elizabeth & James Fall 2012

New York has long been recognised as the place offering wearable, practical designs and Elizabeth & James continue to prove that that's not necessarily a bad thing. One of the greatest thing about the line is that if you're a fan, you're pretty much guaranteed to be in love with each and everyone one of the collections featuring those all-important updated wardrobe-ready pieces that none of us can live without.

So with that in mind, it was business as usual at their fall 2012 presentation. Mary-Kate and Ashley offered up just what their customers want. The trusted parka came in a new dark shade rather than the usual khaki colour we've become accustomed to. Following on from the current penchant for comfort, they also offered a great pyjama suit alongside their signature tuxedo with cropped ankle grazing trousers and the perfect khaki jacket with a quilted overlay.

Get Ready To Join The Flat Pack

This season's new height (or lack thereof) started at Haider Ackermann's S/S12 show. It's not often that the word 'trend' and 'Haider Ackermann' are used in the same sentence, for he's amongst the rare breed of designs so attune to his own vision that tapping into any big trend is never more than a mere coincidence. Nevertheless, the backless brogues that he showed alongside his low slung masculine trousers last season has had a serious ripple effect. The fact that Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have rarely been spotted without them is a pretty good indicator too.

Don't get me wrong, flats aren't anything new. I mean, what woman doesn't own a ballet flat or three but these styles are different. The feeling is far from conservative and is definitively not only the preserve of women who work in the city or want to be 'taken seriously'. Just like the clothes for fall, it seems that designers are becoming more attune to what women actually need, as opposed to simply pumping out killer heel after killer heel as has been too often been the case. With the world out there being tough enough right, being held back by your shoes of all things doesn't make sense anymore.

While I've always been a sucker to heels - I blame Victoria Beckham's book 'That Extra Half Inch - the idea of a good pair of flats has been growing on me. What with the shows just around the corner, the need to find something practical that takes me from shows to appointments and the odd event or two has become my mission and thankfully, there's a lot of good styles out there. Christian Louboutin, who has been one of the major influencers of the ever increasing height of heels, has even succumbed to the charm of the flat offering a really fun, quirky pair in tartan with studded black toe caps. Charlotte Olympia's kitty loafers have persuaded even the most die hard heels fans to go low and even Chloé have created a great fringed pair that are the perfect nod to this season's masculine feel. My style of choice? A pair of gold chunky brogues from Marni that will I know I'll wear to death.

As the above names show, everyone is doing it and it isn't just the big labels either. ASOS probably have the best selection around from the more classic ballet flat styles to cool loafers and timeless brogues.

Are you convinced?

The Olsens Are 'A Force To Be Reckoned With,' Says Estee Stanley

Stylemint, the site launched a year ago by Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, is doing really well.  In the past year the  subscription-based online shop of t-shirts has gone from strength to strength, attracting everyone from Brad Goreski to Joe Zee to come on board as guest stylists. Their most recent collaborator, though, is mega stylist Estee Stanley.

Anyone that's followed Stanley's career will know that, as far as celebrity stylists go, she's up their with the best of them. Most recently she's styled everyone from Penelope Cruz to Lea Michele as well as Ashley Olsen herself, making her the perfect choice for them to collaborate with.

In the short video, Estee explains how she started styling, what she thinks of the design duo and styles two looks using pieces from the site's July offerings.

Elizabeth & James Resort 2013: Summer Tailoring And Business As Usual

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen may still be on a high after winning big at the CFDA Awards recently but this week they were back to work, presenting the resort 2013 collection of their other line, Elizabeth & James.

As I write this raindrops are gathering along my office windowsill and the tree outside is threatening to come thundering through the window, so yes, basically the weather isn't very good but if it was, this is exactly what I want to be wearing. As has become the norm, the collection played with masculine tailoring but in a feminine way, especially on the lightweight and blouses teamed with tailored trousers and Oxford and on the perfect deconstructed white tuxedo.

Alexa Chung Continues To Promote Superga, Collection Available Online Now

Aside from my trusty Converse, trainers aren't something I wear but Superga has swayed me. The Italian sneaker company is doing really well. First up they brought Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen on board as creative directors of a special line for The Row, back in January Alexa Chung was announced as the creative director of the main line and last week they opened their first American store in SoHo. Alexa Chung was out and about recently pushing the S/S12 collection, which is currently available on Shopbop.

‘They Are a Pain in the Ass But They’re Very Good,’ Steve Madden Says About The Olsens

When they received the best womenswear brand award for The Row at the CFDA Awards earlier on this week, it felt hard to remember Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen's Disney days. While the brand has long been a go-to for editors and celebrities, the award cemented their position as being at the helm of a legitimate brand that deserves to be taken seriously. As CFDA president Steven Kolb told Fashionista, 'They were patient and did it right.' This has served them well both with their own lines and partnerships.

Last week Superga, the Italian sneaker brand that the pair have a collection with, hosted a party to celebrate the launch of their first American store in SoHo. Steve Madden, who is responsible for the big launch and has worked with the twins for the last five years on their Elizabeth & James shoe line, complimented their attention to detail. 'They're very demanding, they're very tough,' he told Fashionista when asked what it was like to work with them. 'They want what they want and so we worked hard to get that done.' But it's this exacting standard that he says is their strength. 'They are a pain in the ass. But they're very good though.'

Were you happy to see them scoop the big award?

See Our S/S12 Picks From CFDA Award Winner, The Row

Anyone that follows The Fash Pack on Pinterest will know that I am a big fan of all things Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen and regular readers will know just how fond I am of the pair's luxury brand, The Row.

Last night, then, it was great to see their work officially recognised at the 2012 CFDA Awards, as The Row beat stiff competition from the likes of Marc Jacobs and Proenza Schouler to bag the best womenswear brand award. Like Nicole Richie and Victoria Beckham, the Olsens are amongst the few names that have successfully managed to carve a legitimate fashion career for themselves despite their 'celebrity'.

With that in mind, have a look in the gallery for my favourite pieces from the brand's S/S12 collection available on Net-A-Porter.

See All The Looks From The 2012 CFDA Awards

Last night the CFDA Awards, the Oscars of the fashion world, took place and in New York at Alice Tully Hall and the winners are in. Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen took away the big womenswear designer of the year award for The Row, Joseph Altuzarra won the Swarovski Award for womenswear and Phillip Lim for menswear and Tommy Hilfiger was awarded the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award.

Simon Spurr didn't end up winning the menswear designer of the year award, which was just as well considering all of the controversy surrounding his departure from his namesake line.

Lenny Kravitz Has Designed A Collection For Toms

Throughout his career Lenny Kravitz has been heralded as quite the style icon and most recently he played a stylist in his latest acting role in 'Hunger Games'. Now it looks like the artist has taken his interest in fashion that little bit further, as it emerged today that he has collaborated with Toms on a special summer collection.

The partnership came after Kravitz met the brand's founder Blaky Mycoskie two years ago where the pair instantly hit it off. When asked to come on board, it was actually Kravitz's daughter, actress Zoe, who reportedly convinced him to get involved. The collection is everything you would expect from him. Unlike Toms' partnership with Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, this collection is all about bright colours and comes printed with phrases like 'Let Love Rule'.
