It's back to the '90s, sort of, for Miuccia Prada. For fall, she reinvented pieces she made all those years ago, but at the core of her aesthetic, she's looking back to the 'Mad Men' era. Before even looking at the clothes, models' beehive hairdos and modified cateye glasses gave that away - and as for the actual collection, Prada offered luxurious, expertly tailored pieces that showed off one particular asset: an ample chest.
At times, Prada poked fun at her own point of interest, with pointed bras and (extremely) ruffled tops. But in doing so, she delivered a wearable, classic-Prada collection that let in "curvy" girls normally excluded from more restrictive brands' catwalks for several years. Just a few of the unexpected invitees on the catwalk? Try Lara Stone, Catherine McNeil and Miranda Kerr.
To emphasise the body's upper assets, Prada explored high, belted waists; carefully placed cut-outs; and cup-runneth-over lace for the bodice. She balanced an accentuated upper half with wide A-line skirts, then completed the look with knee socks, knit tights and pointy heels. Rich fabrics weren't hard to be found, from this season's ubiquitous fur to cashmere to tweed effects. Prada's knitwear also amped up, with peacoats and loosely belted sweaters in rich autumn shades standing out. Full collection considered, we have to admire Prada's studied restraint. Now if we all had Lara Stone's silhouette to work, that would be a whole new bonus.
