Next Year's Met Costume Institute Exhibition Will Be On Elsa Schiaparelli And Miuccia Prada

Last year's Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty exhibition following it's incorporation as the the theme of the Met Gala was a big success - record breaking, in fact - so the pressure has been on for the Costume Institute to collaborate with a new designer this year to match the success. As expected, today they confirmed that next year's exhibit will showcase the work of Elsa Schiaparelli and Miuccia Prada's designs at Prada.

“Once we got Schiaparelli as the core part of what we wanted to do, it became a logical jump to Miuccia. They are both Italian women, and even though Miuccia might not describe herself as a feminist, what we see is these two very strong women with a very strong aesthetic,” Harold Koda, Curator in charge of The Costume Institute, explained when asked about their decision to choose the designers for next year's exhibit. “They are both very provocative for their time,” he continued. “We thought it would be very interesting to pit these two women together in an anachronistic conversation.”

Alexander McQueen broke records while alive and continues to do that despite passing 18 months ago. His Savage Beauty exhibition at the Met's Costume Institute in New York showcasing his life's work set records after 650,000 vistors walked through the museum's door to take a glimpse at his work close up.

Ove the past few months, fashion's biggest names have been campaigning to bring the campagin to London, which many believe is its true home. Yesterday reps from the brand confirmed that they are currently in talks with museums in the capital. "Alexander McQueen appreciates the huge amount of interest the public has shown towards the Savage Beauty exhibition," a spokesperson revealed in a statement. "We have been in discussion with a number of major venues in London for some time now however nothing has been finalised. Please be assured that an official announcement will be made the moment we confirm our plans for London."

Anna Wintour Chooses Sarah Jessica Parker To Narrate The Met's 'American Woman' Exhibition

Undeniably, the sound of Sarah Jessica Parker's voice over much-loved episodes of Sex and the City is somewhat comforting to most women, and synonymous with the idea of the American woman - New York in particular. Therefore it only makes sense that Anna Wintour and her team at the Costume Institute had our very own Carrie in mind when considering who would narrate The Met's 'American Woman' exhibition.

Parker recorded the narration for the exhibition on Tuesday, which will feature women's clothing from 1890 to 1940, including fashion movements such as the screen sirens, Gibson girls and bohemians - and who should know better about travelling the decades of style than SJP. "Because of Sex and the City, she is so much associated with New York and America, and with using fashion as a way to shape identity", Andrew Bolton, Costume Institute curator told WWD. 'American Woman: Fashioning A National Identity' will open May 5.

Oprah Winfrey And Patrick Robinson To Co-chair 2010 Met Gala

While this year's co-chairs included Justin Timberlake, Marc Jacobs and Kate Moss, it is Oprah Winfrey and Gap’s Creative Director, Patrick Robinson’s turn at the Costume Institute's next exhibit at the Met in May next year – which is entitled " American Woman: Fashioning a National Identity."

The collection, which will include pieces designed by Coco Chanel, Madame Grès, Charles James, Jeanne Lanvin, Edward Molyneux, Paul Poiret, Elsa Schiaparelli, and Madeleine Vionnet, among others, will consist of approximately 75 outfits - many of which haven't been seen by the public in decades. Coming from the Brooklyn Museum Costume Collection, the haute couture pieces were transferred to the Met in January and will be on display there from May through August in 2010.
