The New Season Skirt: It's Downwards From Here

Fashion compromises don't usually work. Take the kitten heel for example. It doesn't have the transformative superpowers of a killer heel, nor does it have the chic quality of the ballet pump. The midi-skirt, on the other hand, is one compromise that works.

After half a decade of thigh skimming dresses and a general obsession with showing skin, we're all over the mini. Even Balmain has moved on and considering that the brand has always been amongst the big supporters of all things mini, that's a big deal. The maxi has also served it's time, especially after the whole boho trend that never really went away, so the midi is the perfect balance.

It's been around for a while. Marc Jacobs was amongst the first to resurrect it back in 2010 with the Louis Vuitton fall show and ever since, everyone from Victoria Beckham to Dries Van Noten have championed the length. At Burberry this season it was all about showing the style on mixed fabrics like plaids and tweeds and Sarah Burton opted for tartan and leather on skirts and also tapped into the length on coats with strong cinched waists at McQ.

What these brands showed is that the midi length doesn't need to be stuffy. Granted, it's one of those trends that will catch on in the mainstream amongst the more mature woman, aka the women that still have money to splurge during this recession, but there are enough reworked pieces to keep everyone happy.

It was this image of Caroline Issa that convinced me ad fellow editors like Giovanna Battaglia, Taylor Tomasi Hill and Shala Monroque show just how versatile it is. So how to style it? Well if you're going for a polished look I'd do like Ashley Olsen and tuck your top in. As well as emphasising the waist, it also helps elongate the body, which, I'm sure, is music to the ears of anyone that doesn't have model length legs. For a more casual day look this season, team it with thick wool tights, hard wearing ankle boots, knitwear and a biker jacket to give it a tough edge.

If you're still undecided, just give it go. While it has very much been the maxi's underrated sister, the midi has slowly been gaining traction over the past few years so you can be rest assured that it'll have staying power.

Net-A-Porter Get It Spot On With Their 2012 Best Dressed List

Giovanna Battaglia at amfAR

I'm always slightly dubious when it comes to best dressed lists. Sorry to name check but as many of you will recall, British Glamour's 2012 round-up that they released back in Aril was an example of just how bad they can get. I mean, Tulisa being ranked higher than Nicole Richie and Kristen Stewart as number one. Need I say anymore?

Last week Net-A-Porter released theirs and in stark contrast, it's pretty spot on. Giovanna Battaglia stole the top spot and came in at number one. Whether you're  fan of her bold Italian style or not, nobody can deny that she is always perfectly well put together and channels that aesthetic like a pro. In that respect, her position is well deserved.

Model of the moment Hanne Gabby Odiele came in at number two, which I'm really happy to see. She's one of the few models that actually take risks and breaks away from that increasingly boring and predictable models off duty look. I mean, the girl can pull off those high waisted thigh skimming Balenciaga shorts and in broad daylight. Now that's not an easy task.

W Magazine Continue Their Winning Streak With A Naomi Campbell Editorial

W magazine is in a roll. While I've always been a fan of the American title, everything seems to have gone up a notch since Edward Enninful joined as fashion director last year. Aside from bringing his own stylistic eye to the magazine, one of the good thing that Enninful did when he arrived was build a strong team around him and Giovanna Battaglia is amongst the good additions to the team.

This latest editorial that she styled for the magazine is a case in point. Battaglia styled Naomi Campbell to perfection in some of the statement prints that have been doing the rounds for Fall like an embroidered jacket from Etro and one of the printed trouser suits that we saw at Prada. If there's a stylist that knows how to do more-is-more and construct statement looks it's her, so it's unsurprising that the shoot worked out so well.

I haven't been crazy about any of Campbell's spreads in a long time but this is by far one of my favourites and is hopefully the sign of more to come.

Are You Sold On This Season's Peplum Trend?

Just when we thought that pyjama dressing was the only unlikely trend of the season, you can add peplum to that list too. The silhouette isn't something new but for some reason or other, many women avoid it like the plague but this season things have changed. The style has made a serious comeback and everyone seems to being embracing it.

Everyone from Jason Wu and Giambattista Valli to Alexander McQueen and Givenchy paid homage to the style back in September and it's not hard to understand why. As someone that has suffered with finding clothes to fit around my typically South African pear shape, the waist skimming effect is perfect. As Beyoncé and Kim Kardashian show, it accentuates a tiny waist whilst skimming your hips and celebrating curves. Even for those that are more straightly shaped, peplums help create the illusion of curves like it did for Emma Watson and Emma Stone recently.

When Michelle Williams sported that beautiful statement red Louis Vuitton peplum gown it became clear that everyone was converted and unsurprisingly, the high street has picked up on it too. Not all are good but  Zara has created some great styles that are sculptural and structured without the fuss that made many people avoid them in the first place.

The Guest List: 'The Conversation' Party At Diane Von Furstenberg's Studio

Diane von Furstenberg and Gwyneth Paltrow

The last seven days have a been a busy one for the fash pack in New York. Earlier on this week Olivier Rousteing hosted a party at Chelsea's Hotel Americano and today everyone is gearing up for the Met Gala but that didn't stop everyone from going out last night too. Everyone from Gwyneth Paltrow to Giovanna Battaglia attended Diane von Furstenberg's Meatpacking District studio to celebrate Amanda de Cadenet's new Lifetime series, 'The Conversation'. Outfits at the event were good but it was Amber Heard that stole the show in a strapless Zac Posen red and pink block coloured dress.

Quote Me: Giovanna Battaglia On Starting Her Styling Career

There are lots of not-so-glamorous parts of the job, especially when you're starting out. In the beginning, I did my own pickups and returns on my Vespa, and I used my brother's art gallery as a base for shoots—he wanted to kill me! I had never assisted anyone. I just started doing my own shoots and making my own mistakes—big mistakes. But the good thing about making a mistake by yourself is that you never do it again. I didn't know how expensive it was to ship a box from Milan to Paris, and I spent 2,000 euros sending outfits from Yves Saint Laurent. I was in tears on the phone with UPS, like, Oh my god, I could buy a pair of Manolos, a coat, and a Prada dress for that!

Dasha Zhukova Attempts A Combeack With A New Project After POP

Dasha Zhukova's appointment as editor-in-chief of POP was met with raised eyebrows considering her relatively limited amount of industry experience and her short stint at the magazine was not very well received but it looks like the art collector is finally working on a project that's true to her heart and love of art. This week she announced that her new magazine called Garage - which will celebrate all things fashion but in the context of art - will launch this Fall.

Named after the Garage Center for Contemporary Culture (which she opened in Moscow in 2008), the magazine is nothing like anything on the market according to the magazine's art director, Mike Meiré. “It is so very, very different from other magazines,” he explained. And they're going all out for the first issue with multiple covers including one featuring a puppet version of Lily Donaldson created by artist Dinos Chapman and Nick Knight. Zhukova has also secured Damien Hirst to design a cover with a butterfly sticker that peels off to reveal a butterfly tattoo on the model's vagina.

The Anna Dello Russo Brand Continues As She Styles & Appears In Latest Macy's Campaign For INC

In digital age where we're as excited about what people are wearing to the shows, as much as the clothes appearing on the runway the role of the editor continues to grow. Where before it was focused on creating beautiful shoots and pages in magazines, editors like Anna Dello Russo are now becoming their own brand and are building on their new found fame by signing on to collaboration after collaboration.

ADR has mastered this. This week images from the campaign of Macy's private label brand INC have been released. What's interesting about them is that as well as styling the campaign, Dello Russo also makes an appearance alongside Karolina Kurkova showing that brand's are willing to embrace (or jump on the bandwagon) of her new celebrity status. In the past year Giovanna Battaglia and Kate Lanphear have both showed off the designs of Eddie Borgo in his lookbooks and last week Carine Roitfeld was the subject of Macy's Fall 2011 campaign. Five years ago who would have imagined that editors would go from styling models in campaigns, to being the subjects themselves?
