Running Shoes Now Go The Extra Distance Thanks To Stella McCartney

A fashion sneaker's technical quotient is often only a fraction of its style factor. Balenciaga have tapped into the current penchant for them with their panelled leather hi-tops, which have gained a cult-like status and fellow luxury brands like Yves Saint Laurent, Lanvin and Christian Loutboutin have all followed suit. And it doesn't end there. Today, you'll be hard pressed to find a fashion week-goer not sporting Isabel Marant's much loved wedged sneakers. The only problem with all of these is that none of them are actually fit for purpose. Despite being on point sartorially, they're hardly the best things to wear if you want to break into a sweat. Even New Balance, who position themselves as providing classic running sneakers that go the extra sartorial distance, are most fashion than sport.

Against that backdrop, what Stella McCartney is doing with her Adidas collection is to really usher in a rebirth of the fashion sneaker. First up, her trainers are for women. Sounds simple, eh, but the reality is that women have been ignored by the big luxury brands. The thought process seems to be that women spend major dollars on their heels so the luxury fashion trainer is the male counterpart but as the success of McCarney's trainers show, the big brands are really missing a trick.

You see it on the train. Those women, like Melanie Griffith in 1998 film 'Working Girl', wearing sneakers for the daily commute. As you'll know only too well, their outfits look good but their trainers often leave a lot to be desired. Are we just leaving our trainers as an afterthought or is it like I said, that there just hasn't been many options?

More of us than ever are cycling into work, gyming on our lunch breaks or simply wearing trainers on the way to work as we try to pick up our walking pace or take the stairs rather than the escalator; and it's hardly surprising why. In the wake of the continuous messages about the national obesity crisis or if, like me, you're trying to get into those trousers before fashion week, the need for stylish but effective trainers has become a must.

Stella's trainers offer the best of both worlds. You get the cool, fashion side that comes naturally to her as a fashion designer but also the technology and expertise that comes with teaming up with Adidas. One style in particular comes in black mesh with a neon pink underlay and a black and white mesh style is the perfect balance between an everyday shoe and one for hard core exercise. Many of them come with durable rubber soles, CLIMACOOL technology for 360 degree cooling for the entire foot and outer soles with wider outlines for better stability to make sure that, contrary to the common saying, we can have it all.

Consuelo Castiglioni Put The Marni Stamp On The Wild West For Resort 2013

Like Isabel Marant was last season, for the Marni resort 2013 collection Consuelo Castiglioni took inspiration from the Wild West. Unlike Marant, though, Castiglioni did what she does so well by tapping into the theme without presenting something that feels too literal. Instead, all things western were given the Marni treatment.

The reference was particularly apparent on a series of decorative shirts but the incorporation of leather pendants with cabochons and golds studs that were used to close them added a modern twist. Teamed with wide leg cropped trousers and equally decorative jackets, the looks where less 1954 'Vera Cruz' and more 2012.

Aside from the masculine tailoring, a handful of trousers came in the slouchy, oversized comfortable fit that we've seen over the past few seasons and were given a feminine twist by the addiition of stylized flower necklaces and while accessories were there, unlike last season the prints were back as the focus.

Covetique.com Caters For Those With Expensive Taste But Without The Budget

Since Net-A-Porter launched The Outnet, it's now hard to imagine a time when it didn't exist. The days where your favourite brands were inaccessible if you didn't have deep pockets are long. This week new e-commerce website, Covetique, launched with exactly that in mind.

The premise of the site isn't new. Sellers are able to upload their pre-owned designer pieces online in an easy, hassle-free way. What is different about Covetique, though, is the extensive range of designers on offer. The site includes great clothes from brands like Burberry, Isabel Marant, Louis Vuitton and Alexander Wang and accessories from the likes of Manolo Blahnik and Christian Louboutin. Unlike similar sites, the prices are incredibly low with tops from Isabel Marant coming in at only £100 and Jimmy Choo sandals being sold for £130.  To celebrate the launch, Covetique have also teamed up with a number of key industry figures to guest edit the site and showcase their favourite pieces and first up this month is Louise Roe.

Buy It Now: The Wedged Sneaker

When Isabel Marant does something, it catches on and her wedges sneakers are a case in point. Since appearing on the runway the style has become a firm favourite amongst celebrities off-duty like Beyonce and Miranda Kerr. Even more interesting is the fact that many editors have swapped their Louboutin's and incredibly high heels for comfortable variations on the style to attend the shows too and it's clear why.

I have never been a big trainers girl - despite being inspired by Taylor Tomasi Hill to buy a pair - but this is something that I have decided to invest in. Like the pyjama trend that I wrote about recently, the Marant style wedged trainer signals a move even further towards the current concern for functionality and comfort in fashion, which many brands are tapping into at the moment.

While they do have a heel there is no denying that the subtle wedge straddles the perfect balance between an informal trainer and easy to wear wedge and besides, they're perfect for those busy days pounding the pavement. What more could you need?

Are you convinced?

The Navajo Nation Hit Back At The Fashion Industry With A Lawsuit

Early last week we were at talking about the appropriateness of Rodarte's aboriginal prints but now the focus is on references to Navajo tribal culture. Over the past few season everyone from Proenza Schouler to Isabel Marant has tapped into their cultural references and as you would expect, the high street has picked up on this and gone to town. It's this misappropriation of the 'Navajo' name and their culture, though, which has been the source of litigation.

“We are very proud of our name, Navajo,” Ben Shelly, Navajo Nation president, said when referring to a recent legal challenge to Urban Outfitters use of the Navajo trademark and name. “To be used in this kind of fashion, I’m very unhappy with it,” he continued referring to the designers reinterpreting their culture. “The fame or reputation of the Navajo name and marks is such that, when defendant uses the ‘Navajo’ and ‘Navaho’ marks with its goods and services, a connection with the Navajo Nation is falsely presumed,” the suit alleged.

Isabel Marant Won't Launch A Perfume Anytime Soon

2012 is set to be a big year for Isabel Marant. Over the years her accessible and easy to wear collections have all managed to achieve 'IT' status and have the long waiting lists to match. This year she plans to capitalise on this success by expanding and in a major way.

Last week she revealed that she will open stores in Los Angeles, London, Hong Kong, Seoul and Tokyo taking her stand alone stores to 14 worldwide. But don't expect her to launch a perfume line any time soon. "I’ve been asked 50,000 times to produce a scent, but I don’t like perfume," she said. "I have an issue with brands pursuing growth through the development of loads of ancillary products."

Isabel Marant Fall 2012: Feminine Americana And Business As Usual

Isabel Marant is going from strength to strength. This year the designer will open her second American store in Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles and her interest in the all things American was clear in the collection as she reverted back to her Americana theme. All of the features that you would expect were there like the floral details on shirts, slim line cropped suede trousers and cowboy boots and despite the strong cowboy theme, the collection was actually really feminine. Many of the skirts came in multi-tiered styles and blouses were bloose fitted in cream and dresses often came in mini styles in white lace.

Marant always has a knack for creating pieces that women want to wear. All you need to do is look at the long waiting lists that her clothes attract but unfortunately, the collections are starting to feel samey. The Americana theme has been done extensively before and rather than experimenting with the signatures, Marant took a very literal approach to it. The same is true for the styling. The slouchy half-tucked in shirts and low slung trousers, while good, were no different from what we've seen from Marant in the past.

Get Ready To Get Sporty In 2012

2012 is going to be the year of sportswear. This year the Olympics is finally coming to London and to celebrate designing the official kit for team Great Britain, Stella McCartney has several project that are yet to be disclosed in the works. And it doesn't end there.

British Marie Claire took the bold step of casting former British world hepathlon champion, Jessica Ennis, as their February 2012 cover star and designers have been inspired by all things sporty this season as the trend dominated the S/S12 collections, particularly at brands like Isabel Marant, 3.1. Phillip Lim and Alexander Wang.

Will you embrace sportswear this year?

Isabel Marant Follows In Zac Posen's Footsteps

We all love Isabel Marant but unfortunately, only fans in her native Paris and New York have been able to pick up her pieces from her store. But things are about to change as the designer has just announced that she's about to launch a store in London.

Bruton Street will be the brand's new home and neighbours include both Stella McCartney and Matthew Williamson.
