Alber Elbaz Ditched Nostalgia And Looked Ahead At Lanvin For SS13

The runway was raised at the Lanvin show last week. The cynical side of me wants to believe that Alber Elbaz was make a statement that he's still up there with the best of them in light of the changes at Dior and Saint Laurent. The other side of me, less driven by a good piece of fashion drama, recognises that that was probably not the case. Elbaz has been publicly supportive of the changes at both labels but nonetheless, if the runway construction was coincidental, the message came through in the clothes.

After celebrating his 10th anniversary at the brand last season, Elbaz moved away from nostalgia and instead pushed on forward. This season he seemed inspired by the East, which was apparent particularly on the structured Chinese military-style coats and obi belts on coats. The reference was there but subtle, something that could have been difficult if done by lesser hands. The tailoring was loose, which is something different for Lanvin, but the house's codes were still there. The jewellery continued to come in strong statement metal hardware and a handful of dresses came heavily embellished and one shouldered.

First Look: Sarah Jessica Parker Styled By Anna Wintour As A Vogue Editor For Glee

Sarah Jessica Parker has been away from the small screen for far too long for my liking but as you know, that's all changing as she's signed up to appear as a guest star on season four of Glee. Earlier on this month, Glee actor Ryan Murphy confirmed that the actress would play the editor of Vogue.com (nice plug for the magazine's site) and that Anna Wintour would style her and now the first image of the outfit is out.

Murphy tweeted this image of SJP all dressed up in character as Isabelle wearing what looks like a Lanvin necklace and according to Fashionista, is a dress from up-and-coming label, Faster Than Paris. The label is still relatively unknown but has some strong people behind it. The brand's founder Tracy L. Cox has had stints at DKNY and Peter Som and also worked for Patricia Field on Sex And The City, which could explain why the brand was chosen.

Are you excited for her appearance to air?

Running Shoes Now Go The Extra Distance Thanks To Stella McCartney

A fashion sneaker's technical quotient is often only a fraction of its style factor. Balenciaga have tapped into the current penchant for them with their panelled leather hi-tops, which have gained a cult-like status and fellow luxury brands like Yves Saint Laurent, Lanvin and Christian Loutboutin have all followed suit. And it doesn't end there. Today, you'll be hard pressed to find a fashion week-goer not sporting Isabel Marant's much loved wedged sneakers. The only problem with all of these is that none of them are actually fit for purpose. Despite being on point sartorially, they're hardly the best things to wear if you want to break into a sweat. Even New Balance, who position themselves as providing classic running sneakers that go the extra sartorial distance, are most fashion than sport.

Against that backdrop, what Stella McCartney is doing with her Adidas collection is to really usher in a rebirth of the fashion sneaker. First up, her trainers are for women. Sounds simple, eh, but the reality is that women have been ignored by the big luxury brands. The thought process seems to be that women spend major dollars on their heels so the luxury fashion trainer is the male counterpart but as the success of McCarney's trainers show, the big brands are really missing a trick.

You see it on the train. Those women, like Melanie Griffith in 1998 film 'Working Girl', wearing sneakers for the daily commute. As you'll know only too well, their outfits look good but their trainers often leave a lot to be desired. Are we just leaving our trainers as an afterthought or is it like I said, that there just hasn't been many options?

More of us than ever are cycling into work, gyming on our lunch breaks or simply wearing trainers on the way to work as we try to pick up our walking pace or take the stairs rather than the escalator; and it's hardly surprising why. In the wake of the continuous messages about the national obesity crisis or if, like me, you're trying to get into those trousers before fashion week, the need for stylish but effective trainers has become a must.

Stella's trainers offer the best of both worlds. You get the cool, fashion side that comes naturally to her as a fashion designer but also the technology and expertise that comes with teaming up with Adidas. One style in particular comes in black mesh with a neon pink underlay and a black and white mesh style is the perfect balance between an everyday shoe and one for hard core exercise. Many of them come with durable rubber soles, CLIMACOOL technology for 360 degree cooling for the entire foot and outer soles with wider outlines for better stability to make sure that, contrary to the common saying, we can have it all.

Alber Elbaz Expains The Idea Behind The Casting For Lanvin's Fall 2012 Campaign

Alber Elbaz is like a hero for women. Without wanting to sound too cliché, he always creates pieces at Lanvin that make women feel and look beautiful and unlike other brands, you don't need to be of a pre-pubescent age and have a model figure to do so. In that light, the casting of their latest campaign makes sense.

As I'm sure you have already seen, the brand's Fall 2012 campaign features real men and women aged between 18 and 82. 'I wanted to see people from different age groups, body shapes and personalities wearing Lanvin,' he told Vogue.com. 'That is what Lanvin is all about and represents - we don't only do clothes for 20 year-old girls. I love to see mature women wearing Lanvin as well. I love wrinkles, I love grey hair.'

Coming from any other brand, the cynic in me would think that the casting was no more than an example of a PR stunt (or PR genius you might say considering the buzz around it), but for Lanvin it just works. 'There was a secret casting in New York and the team who did the casting did a fantastic job,' he explained. 'They sent me all the photos of the anonymous people who had been pre-cast and the day before the shoot, I met them all. It was an unforgettable experience to meet with these beautiful people.'

Are you a fan of the campaign?

Selena Gomez Covers US Elle July Issue

I've never been a huge fan of US Elle's covers and sadly, their Kristen Stewart June cover was noticeably weaker than the actresses over covers this month. For July, though, they're on good form. For the issue Selena Gomez takes centre position wearing a strapless Dolce & Gabbana dress on one cover and a Balmain top on another.

The shoot is just as good as the cover and sees her looking all grown-up wearing brands like Lanvin and Yves Saint Laurent. In the accompanying cover story she talks about all the things you would expect, ranging from her relationship with Justin Bieber to trying to fight the 'Disney' image.

While the cover works, it does leave you asking questions. Granted, Gomez has a huge loyal following but as Coco's Tea Party points out, that audience is completely different to Elle's readership so why they decided to book her for the cover is a mystery.

What do you think?

Iris Apfel Has Donated 600 Pieces From Her Wardrobe For A New Exhibition

Much to her amusement, there's been a revival of interest in Iris Apfel's style over the past year or so.'I think it's funny, because I'm not doing anyting differently than I did 70 years ago,' she told The Cut recently. 'Now all of a sudden I'm an icon, so I guess that's pretty good.' Now the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts, is tapping into that by creating an exhibition in her honour.

Apfel donated 600 items from her personal wardrobe for the exhibition including pieces from Lanvin and Alexander McQueen as well as special flea market pieces that she's picked up over the years. The collection will also feature some of the statement eye wear that she's become known for, as well as art pieces.

Quote Me: Alber Elbaz On The Idea Behind The New Lanvin Photo-Book

I thought that at a time like now, when the whole industry is about the six minutes of the show and a review that is being written in a taxi because then there is the next one, I thought, I'm going to show everyone how much effort goes into making a single dress. I wanted to show how many threads you have to put together to make one rose; how much thought goes into a button.

What They Wore: 84th Annual Academy Awards

Angelina Jolie in Atelier Versace

The red carpet looks at last night's Oscars was mixed. Angelina Jolie looked incredible in an Atelier Versace black gown with thigh high slit, just about everyone wearing Elie Saab Couture looked incredible and Emma Stone stole the show in a red halter neck Giambattista Valli Couture gown.

Unsurprisingly, Jessica Chastain chose an Alexander McQueen gown and Rooney Mara chose Givenchy as we expected but unfortunately did not make the statement that we were all hoping for. The most interesting look of the night came from Gwyneth Paltrow who, like last year with that Calvin Klein dress, managed to pull off a difficult Tom Ford dress.

What They Wore: 12th Annual AFI Awards

Awards season is officially in full swing and last night Beverley Hills played host the 12th Annual AFI Awards. Compared to what we've seen so far this week, red carpet looks at the event was disappointing but naturally, Rooney Mara was produced the best outfit of the night in pre-fall Lanvin.
