Along with the Met Gala, the annual amfAR event during the Cannes Film Festival is one of the biggest events on the calendar. Unlike some of the big award ceremonies that can often be a bit hit and miss, amfAR always attracts a good red carpet and last night, with the exception of Kate Upton, was no exception.
Diane Kruger continued her reign as one of the best dressed women at this year's event, sporting a dress from the Chanel Resort 2013 collection that was unveilved recently. Karolina Kurkova continued her love of all things gold in a beautiful Roberto Cavalli sheer sequin dress with a matching jacket but you'll pleased to know that it came sans gold blingy hat.
Kanye West's fashion line was notably missing in most magazine's this season aside from the fur shoes that we reported appeared in the latest issue of Harper's Bazaar Australia. While this may true, magazine's are still interesting in the man himself as this image has just been released of the rapper's first appearance in American Vogue.
In the feature, titled 'Tisci's Time', West appears along the designer's celebrity muses Liv Tyler, Karolina Kurkova, Florence Welch and Liya Kebede. His inclusion in the mix isn't a surprise. Yeezy has sported the designer's wares extensively in the past and brought him on board to design the cover art for the 'Watch The Throne' album.“I was a little bit scared,” Tisci told Hamish Bowles, “because I’m not an artist.”
Stefano Tonchi of W magazine took a break from the shows to partner with Joanne Crewes to host an event for 'The Ever Changing Face Of Beauty', a video installation created by Sølve Sundsbø. While all the attention went to Sienna Miller and her baby bump, the outfits worn by Evan Rachel Wood, Liya Kebede and Cate Blachett, were definitely worth some attention.
The big winner on the night was editor's favourite, Joseph Altuzarra, who took home $300,000 to go towards his business as well the mentoring that comes along with the prize money. Pamela Love and Chicago, Shane Gabier and Chris Peters of Creatures of the Wind were the runners up and will walk away with $100,000 and of course, the mentorship from the CFDA's Business Advisory Committee.
Every model from Liya Kebede to Joan Smalls attended as well as designers like Donna Karan, keynote speaker Calvin Klein and past winner Alexander Wang.
Besides her contract with Lacoste, we haven't seen a lot of Liya Kebede but that is all set to change. This week L'Oreal announced that the Ethiopian model will serve as their global brand ambassador and spokesperson. Kebede will join the ever-growing L'Oreal roster which includes stars like Jennifer Lopez, Beyonce, Freida Pinto and Gwen Stefani.
Last night the Lincoln Centre in New York played home to the 2011 CFDA Awards. As we knew, Marc Jacobs picked up the Lifetime Achievement Award, Phoebe Philo was presented with the International Award and Lady Gaga collected the big 'Fashion Icon' gong at last night's ceremony.
Other big winners of the night include the Proenza Schouler duo who picked up the award for womenswear designer of the year. Accessories designer of the year went to Alexander Wang, Menswear Designer of the Year went to Michael Bastian and Eddie Borgo recieved the Swarovski Award for Accessory Design.
Lacoste recently revealed that they are plannign to revamp the brand in the new year. The first stage of their new marketing strategy was to update their well known tagline "Un Peu d'Air Sur Terre" - meaning 'A Bit of Air on Earth' - to 'Unconventional Chic'. The new tagline appears in their new campaign featuring Anja Rubik, Noah Mills, Jon Kortajarena and Liya Kebede shot by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggot, all sporting the brand's iconic white polo shirt over black eveningwear.
When asked about the idea behind the campaign Lacoste CEO Christophe Chenut said, “We’re showing that you can be chic in a different way, not just when you are dressed up for a party or for the office.”
