The Cut Challenges The Viability Of The 'Resort' Season By Taking Ten Big Questions To Industry

The fashion calendar as it stands is already crammed with annually important events - of highest importance comes the two seasonal Fashion Weeks, then there is the Menswear and Couture Fashion Week, the CFDA Awards, the Costume Institute Gala... need we go on. Add to the madness the newly invented 'Resort' season (or Cruise, Holiday, Pre-Spring, Pre-Summer, Pre-Collection - whatever you want to call it), and editors, buyers and the rest of the industry find themselves hard pushed for time and wondering where this invader season came from.

Though the resort season began as a small collection of labels designing for the lucky, and often rich holiday makers, it has escalated under the blind eye of the fashion industry, and has left many wondering what the consequences of adding a third season to the year will be. With over 75 resort collections being presented in the past month, The Cut took it upon them to ask key industry players their opinions of the new season, it's name and the viability of adding resort fashion week to the calendar.

Been Wondering Why They're So Many Resort Collections?

We're not the only ones that noticed that a lot more designers have shown full-on resort collection this season. According to The Wall Street Journal's Christina Brinkley, the move was because a certain someone requested them. "Wondered why 'resort' is a big runway show season this year," Binkley said on Twitter. "Just heard Anna Wintour asked for them." Over the past week everyone from Jason Wu to Yves Saint Laurent and Oscar de la Renta have shown fully fleged resort collections.

How do you feel about bandage dresses?

Herve Leger, who debuted his signature line in 1985, created the body-con frocks when he had a lightbulb moment to wrap scrap fabric into a piece of clothing. Bandage dresses were everywhere in the late '80s and early '90s, and then took off again when Leger was relaunced by BCBG's Max Azria in April 2007.

These looks, from Leger's Resort 2010 collection, are basically the newest of the new for the style. Are you in love or over it?

Miuccia Prada swapped austerity for a fun, pretty and tropical feel for her resort offerings this week. Last season, the designer presented stern tailoring in a sombre palette of browns and dark greens. If Prada was ever going to show a sign of optimism, this collection is it.

Balenciaga Resort Is Willing to Take Risks

Nicolas Ghesquiere based some of Balenciaga's Resort 2010 collection on the brand's archives - Cristobal Balenciaga designs from the '50s and '60s - but as for the bulk of his imagination, we got refreshing and new. Screw the economy; Ghesquiere was out to prove his creative prowess.

All we can say is that with skirts as short as he took them, we're glad we write about and dress models rather than walk the runway.

Okay, so you're dad's an Emmy and Golden Globe award-winning actor and your mum is, well one of the hottest women in Hollywood. With that in the family, it was hardly surprising that Tallulah Willis, daughter of Bruce Willis and Demi Moore, used her star status to bag herself a internship at Harper's Bazaar.

Whilst most interns leave the office wishing they could spend some 'quality one-on-one time' with the samples in the fashion closet, Tallullah is sporting the same designer gear as she sits next to the same editors that she runs around for during the day at the resort shows in New York.

Not bad for an intern, eh?
