Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin are a dutch photography duo. Having shot Fall 0/9 campaigns for Gucci, Balmain and YSL the couple have continued to build on their success since the early 90’s. Pushing the boundaries between reality and often the surreal they create interesting, clever photographs that have become iconic long after the campaigns are over. Having previously used a lot of digital manipulation which enabled them to explore subjects such as gender, sexuality, superficiality and identity they now use very little as their photographs have become more subtle. American, Japanese, Italian and French Vogue often use their work, as well as recent covers for Interview and i-D.
Steven Meisel is an American photographer most noted for his work for Vogue US and Italia, having shot every cover of Italia since 1988. Other famous collaborations include Madonna’s album covers for ‘Like a Virgin’ and her greatest hits album GHV2, as well as shooting her for the Louis Vuitton Spring 2009 campaign. More recently he has shot fall 09 campaigns for Mulberry, Prada and Balenciaga to name a few. His images often draw upon current cultural events, art and film and have occasionally caused controversy. One such editorial was featured in Vogue Italia September 2006, which examined restricted liberties in post 9/11 America. The shoot (top left) featured models posing as terrorists, and police snipers. However despite this he is admired as being one of the most influential and forward thinking photographers of today, with models desperate to appear in his masterpieces.
Karlie Kloss is definitely proving her model credentials this season. With a rate of appearances so high in the September and October issues of Vogue worldwide as well as the long list of campaigns she stars in currently, it is questionable as to how long it will be before the 17-year old beauty reaches supermodel status. Appearing in over 23 images in the October issue of American Vogue - including a spread styled by the one and only Grace Coddington - and having landed the front cover of the October issues for both Vogue Italia and Vogue Portugal, Kloss' youthful beauty has taken her a long way since being discovered at a charity catwalk show aged 13, which lead to being signed to Elite Model Management in 2007. Add to the mix ad campaigns for industry giants such as Alexander McQueen, Chloé, Marc Jacobs and Pringle, as well as a spread in Vogue Italia's September issue, and it is without doubt that Kloss is on the top of her game. Naomi, Kate and co, watch out - there's a new girl in town, and she's here for the long run.
When it comes to the blogosphere, it doesn't get much bigger than Scott Schuman. Since he started his website 'The Satorialist' in 2005, Schuman has shot for everyone from DKNY to Vogue Italia and has even modelled in an ad campaign for Gap's 2008 fall campaign. Since his arrival at London Fashion Week last weekend, we've spotted women lingering around him in the hope of having the ultimate compliment and being shot by him for his blog.
With all of that in mind, you can imagine our delight when we were invited to attend the press party for Schuman's book signing at Liberty this week.
[Vogue Italia issue] made some noise, but, unfortunately, we are the same as before. People, in the panic of the recession, don't dare to put a girl of color in their campaign, full stop. Nor of any other race. It's a shame. It's very sad.
When she sported her new shaved 'do on her way to London a while back, the fashion industry's tongues started wagging admist rumours that the Bajan singer was on her way to shoot for Vogue Italia with Steven Klein.
The rumours were true. Rihanna missed out on the cover of the actual magazine, but looked fierce in this Valentino dress on the magazine's couture supplement.
Loved by French Vogue, Scott Schuman has just bagged another Vogue deal to put on his CV. Having already shot for French Vogue, Schuman is said to have also won over Vogue Italia's editor Franca Sozzani, so much so that he was chosen to shoot Rachel Scutt for the magazine.
Not to miss out, his girlfriend Garance Dore is also upping the ante. Recent reports have revealed that the fellow street style photographer will now work with Vogue Paris more frequently on their website and potentially in the magazine too. This week, Gap's Patrick Robinson announced that Dore will collaborate with the high street retailer on a pop-up exhibit in London which is launched next month.
Times are changing in fashion and I'm not simply talking about the new A/W 09/10 catwalk trends. The last year or so has seen the fashion industry slowly welcome South and East Asian models into the fashion fold. From once being unthinkable to imagine Asian models on the runway, today their presence is felt and embraced on the catwalk from New York to Paris and London to Milan.
