Picture this: A discussion between Anna Wintour and Diane von Furstenberg at the first CFDA town-hall meeting.
Wintour: Could someone lead a committee that would make ground rules for retailers of when the discounting starts, and then all the retailers can agree to it?
Von Furstenberg: That's illegal!
Wintour: Is that something we can change? We have friends in the White House now!
Von Furstenberg: Anything is possible.

Sometimes people try extra hard to get respected guests at their parties. Sometimes they make up award categories to get them to show. Sometimes, none of that works, as in the case of Michelle Obama skipping out on the 2009 CFDA Fashion Awards.
