Did Kim Kardashian's Bebe Collection Knock Off Fendi?

Fendi image via Style.com

Uh-oh: First Tim Gunn says the Kardashian sisters have "an absence of taste," and now the Coco Perez team is saying the girls might have an absence of scruples. A design from Bebe's Kardashian collection, which Kim Kardashian wore to the label's show at New York Fashion Week, looks strikingly similar to a Look 22 from the Fall '09 Fendi collection. Eniko Mihalik originally wore a cream hooded dress topped with a brown leather corset on the runway, while Kardashian wore a grey hooded dress with a black corset last week.

Coco Perez points out that Kim Kardashian previously was accused of stealing the logo of a Houston-based jewellery designer. (She was sent a Korcula necklace in 2008, was photographed wearing it, and then used a similar design for her perfume branding.) To Kardashian's credit, she never claimed to actually design the Bebe collection that's currently in question, and we know there are hazy lines when it comes to fashion copyright laws. That said, we wouldn't want to mess with Fendi - or Karl Lagerfeld.

Do you think the designs are too close for comfort?

UPDATE: Kardashian took to her blog to respond. "What stores like Bebe do is take runway fashion and use it as inspiration to create pieces that are wearable and accessible for everyone," she said. "To say any of our pieces are a knock off is like saying every item in every clothing store in your mall is a knock off."

Kardashians' Bebe Line: Stretchy, Short, Corset-Topped

"No, there's no particular theme," Kim Kardashian said after Bebe's Kardashian-line show at New York Fashion Week. "We wanted our first season to just represent us, and what we like to wear. Me and Kourtney and Khloe all have different styles, but there are lots of one-piece dresses - it's easiest when you're putting an outfit together - and we wanted fabrics that were stretchy because we all have different body types and wanted something that would fit all of us."

We agree that no theme turned up on the Bebe-Kardashian catwalk, unless it was this: wear your dresses short, one-shouldered if possible, and potentially topped with a leather corset or vest. Unlike most celeb design collaborators, Kardashian chose to sit front-row at the show, rather than run around backstage. And why? At first, Kardashian told reporters she wanted to see how the clothes moved on the models. When asked if it was really because she didn't want to pretend she actually designed the collection, she answered, "Exactly."
