When we heard that Karl Lagerfeld would guest editor French newspaper Metro for the day, we were excited. Kaiser Karl is known for delivering a good sound bite and as you would expect, it was business as usual.
On Lana Del Rey:
I prefer Adele and Florence Welch. But as a modern singer she is not bad.The thing at the moment is Adele. She is a little too fat, but she has a beautiful face and a divine voice. Lana del Rey is not bad at all. She looks very much like a modern-time singer. In her photos she is beautiful. Is she a construct with all her implants? She's not alone with implants.
Michelle Obama has mastered the art of creating air gasping moments with her outfit choices. She did that with her Jason Wu dress at Barack Obama's inauguration and most controversially when she wore Alexander McQueen to the Chinese state dinner. Over the weekend she did it again in this stunning strapless Vera Wang gown that she wore to attend the 34th annual Kennedy Center honors.
2011 has been a great year for Doo Ri Chung. Back in April she gave birth to a baby boy, she was recently name as the latest designer to work with Macy's on their Impulse line and that came only two days after Michelle Obama sported one of her dresses to a state dinner.
Although having the two things happen within days of one another sounds like the hand of PR spin, it was actually a pure coincidence. 'Everyone thought it was planned, but it was just luck. I found out about Michelle Obama because a Washington Post reporter called my cell phone while I was in the car, and I was like, "She is?"' Chung told The Cut. 'It's the first time she's worn something from my collection, and it turned out to be great timing with the Macy's announcement. It was also nice that she wore it to the state dinner with the South Korean president — personally, I relate more to being American than being Korean, but it was a nice moment for my Korean family members too.'
The New York fashion industry isn't too happy with Michelle Obama at the moment. The First Lady has pushed the National Design Awards back from the middle of July to September 13, which bang in the middle of fashion week.
The problem? Many of this years honorees like Jason Wu and Prabal Gurung will be preparing for their shows so won't be able to attend. Gilles Mendel is the only honoree who has pushed his show date back in order to attend. "First Lady Michelle Obama sure knows her designer labels, but her handlers must have misplaced her fashion calendar," WWD wrote.
There aren't many black people in prominent positions in the fashion industry: fact. The past few years has seen a focus on their absence in the modelling world but little has been said about the lack of black people in the industry generally, but this was one of the areas of focus in a recent interview with Edward Enninful in the Huffington Post.
When asked about whether the industry is becoming more inclusive of black designers, models and editors, the new fashion director of W made it clear that not much had changed. "The American fashion industry really has had to reassess its approach to fashion, particularly because Obama came into office. You know, for one of the most influential women [First Lady Michelle Obama] in the country to be black," he explained. "I know that meant a great deal to a lot of black people in the fashion industry. And also now we have Twitter, we have the internet, and I've seen so many young black people who are involved in fashion. They're making their own clothes, they're styling, they're taking photographs, and I guess the future generation to come, they're all racing to become one global fashion industry. That's what I hope, anyway."
I like to patronize American designers, and the vast majority of the clothes that I wear are [designed by Americans.] But there are a lot of other designers that have cute stuff, too...I don't think that I’m any different from any other woman, other than the fact that people see what I wear and then they talk about it.
I think it was absolutely wrong for her to wear something by a foreign designer, particularly at a dinner for China, with which we have a terrible trade imbalance. She really should be promoting American fashion. And I think the dress itself was all wrong, too. It made her look gigantic. She completely overshadowed President Hu, and even President Obama looked small next to her. I think she’s trying too hard to be fashion-forward, and that’s not really what a First Lady should be. It’s too bad, because she’s a beautiful woman — and it’s a beautiful dress, but just wrong for the occasion.

How life has changed (and continues to change) for Kate Middleton. Aside from being engaged to Prince William, Middleton is quickly being the focus of attention in the fashion world.
According to sources, Vogue and Harper's Bazaar are both trying to secure her first cover. Vogue seems the natural choice - after all, they were the magazine that bagged Michelle Obama's first cover. But we shouldn't rule Harper's out just yet Page Six explains. The magazine's fashion features editor Sarah Buys is married to Tom Parker Bowles, son of Camilla so they could be in with a better change. Glenda Bailey was asked about the issue at a recent event but didn't reveal anything. "I'm very fortunate to be editor-in-chief of Harper's Bazaar and, as a result, have lots of people who want to be on the cover," she said. "We're very, very fortunate to have some of the great Kates appear on our cover — Kate Winslet, Cate Blanchett. Who knows the future?"
The magazine's stylist Alice Stephenson seems convinved that Harper's will bag the cover. "There will probably be a war with Vogue, but Glenda is the woman to get Kate," she said.
