Model genes seem to run in certain families. Everyone sat up and took notice when Kate Moss' younger sister Lottie was unveiled in the model's wedding spread in Vogue; Cindy Crawford's 10 year-old daughter recently launched her modelling career with a Versace campaign and 90s supermodel Kristen McMenamy's daughter is doing the same.
18 year-old Lily McMenamy is already represented by Next Models but this season marks the first time that her model card has been used in the agency's Paris show package. Already, people are reporting that the model has snapped up a big exclusive for Yves Saint LaurentSaint Laurent Paris. Securing such a big show is a big deal on a normal day but since its the first women's ready to wear collection from Hedi Slimane, this upcoming collection is even more special and means that all eyes will be on the line-up.
Models foraying into design isn't anything new. Kate Moss is probably the most successful example with her now ended partnership with Topshop and more recently Rosie Huntington-Whiteley made the transition by designing a lingerie collection for Marks & Spencer. And by the sounds of it, Dree Hemingway might follow suit soon too.
Talking to Grazia at the Ermanno Scervino show, she revealed that she'd actually been working on a collection not too long ago. 'Last year, I was working on my own lingerie line but then modelling took over and I didn' want to do anything half-heartedly,' she explained. In terms of a fashion line, the aesthetic of anything she would come out with would have a menswear focus. 'I love that '70s vibe - unbleached fabrics, oversized trousers - and I have a book of '70s climbers wearing perfectly dishevelled outfits in California so that would be inspiration.'
The collection was a huge success when it hit stores last week but the Marni for H&M look book has been brought under fire over this image of model Aymeline Valade. Critics have spoken out about the image saying that the 26 year-old looks 'ready to collapse' and according to GP Julian Spinks, Valade 'looks very unwell, almost corpse-like' and argued that the retailer had been behaved irresponsibly in publishing the image especially since they appeal to a young customer.
'My 15-year-old loves to shop at H&M and I always feel the experience is a bit of fun for her and her friends, especially when big designers collaborate making expensive labels more affordable,' a mother told the Daily Mail. 'But after seeing the disturbingly thin girl used to model the Marni collection, I would think twice about encouraging her to go there. What kind of standards are they setting to teenagers when they say it's attractive to look that gaunt? 'It's bad enough with fashion magazines pushing an unhealthy and unrealistic image of beauty. I would have expected more from H&M.'
2011 has been the year of the model wedding. Kate Moss, Anja Rubik and Lily Aldridge have all got married this year and now Snejana Onopka has joined them. Last week the model tied the knot with 29-year-old businessmen Mykola Schura wearing Vera Wang in front of less than 40 guests, according to Fashionologie. "It was very traditional," Onopka said of the ceremony, . "I've never been to weddings. This is the first wedding I attended, and it's mine!"
Clockwise from top left: Alexander Wang, Derek Lam, Lacoste, Peter Som, Rag & Bone, Richard Chai Love
Get to know the name Julia Nobis. Although the name may not ring a bell, if you've been paying attention to the S/S12 shows this week you have definitely seen her face. This season, the yound model has already walked for Lacoste, Peter Som, Richard Chai Love, Derek Lam and Alexander Wang.
Things have changed dramatically, but we still have a ways to go. Years ago, if you looked at an agency's roster, maybe 2 percent was black and 1 percent was Asian. I am not faulting the agencies, though; if there was demand, there would have been more. Today, if you open up the newest issue of Vogue, you'll see Joan Smalls, Liu Wen, and Arlenis Sosa representing the most prestigious beauty brands in the business. The challenge for fashion brands is to understand what is considered "cool" in Tokyo, as that’s different than London or Austin, Texas. We have to piece together an inclusive casting of people, but stay on point with the message of the brand. Now, as casting directors, we have to cast our nets further by traveling ourselves or using social media to find that tattooed skater boy who is just as likely to come from Singapore as he is from Bushwick.
Although 'The City' was a firm favourite on our TV schedule over the show's one year life, its stars are largely struggling to make a statement in the industry since it was dropped by MTV late last year with Olivia Palermo being the biggest exception.
But it looks like Palermo isn't the only exception to the rule. Despite having a small role on the show, Jessica Hart's modelling career has catapulted since appearing on the show. Last season she walked in numerous shows in London and New York and has just bagged a ELLE Spain cover shot by Santiago Esteban, as well as an editorial in the latest issue of US ELLE.
