Whitney Thompson Isn't Happy With The Fake Acceptance Of Plus Size Models

Former America's Next Top Model winner Whitney Thompson has a bone to pick with the fashion industry. The 23 year-old, who turned to plus size modelling after struggling with weight issues as a teen, doesn't think the fashion industry has genuinely embraced plus size models despite the recent success of Crystal Renn, and she makes some interesting points.

She told the Huffington Post that designers are simply jumping on the bandwagon:

"Karl Lagerfeld two years ago was saying the only people who care about plus size are the fat mummies sitting on their couches eating crisps. Now he's shooting the plus issue for V, are you kidding? Really V, you forgot about that? I mean, it was a huge issue. And he has a Chanel line for plus girls and Crystal Renn's in it and it's so fake, it's so phony and people just jump on the bandwagon. So I think it's important to do research and be smart about the companies that you do support."

She continued:

"Yeah, everyone is jumping on the bandwagon, but as plus girls we've been ignored for so long that it's like you know they throw us a cookie and we're thrilled about it. We are thrilled and we have to be thrilled cause we've never had anything, but at the same time I think we have to be smart about it: Great, I applaud Vogue for having a shape issue, but screw Vogue for not having shapes in every issue. It's B.S. It's frustrating. It's infuriating because we have to be excited, we have to be thrilled that there's one issue that has girls who eat. Great! But it should be in every issue. So I think we have to keep fighting. We have to celebrate and pat ourselves on the back for what we've done, but we have to do more."

Julien MacDonald Declares There Will Be No Plus Size Models On The Newest Series Of BNTM

Britain's Next Top Model has no doubt had a somewhat needed high-fashion makeover by the looks of things, as not only has Lisa Snowdon been replaced by Elle 'The Body' Macpherson, but Julien MacDonald has taken a place on the judging panel. Confirming the change in direction for the show, MacDonald has declared that there is to be no plus-size models in the latest series - "This is a serious show," he proclaimed, adding "You can't have a plus-size girl winning - it makes it a joke."

Despite Tyra Banks, founder of the television series allowing plus-size Whitney Thompson to win sister show ANTM, Julien announced that he thinks adding them into the competition is unfair. "It's not fair on them - you're setting them up for a fall - I know what would happen to them afterwards" the Welsh designer said, adding. "They are looked down on, they're frowned upon. A catwalk model is a size six to eight. If you're a size fourteen in a room full of size eights - you're in the wrong room."
