Barneys' New Senior Fashion Director Is Only 29

Amanda Brooks and Tomoko Ogura

When Barneys announced that Tomoko Ogura would be promoted to the role of senior fashion director after Amanda Brooks' surprise departure, the move made sense. The fact that she had already worked at the company as their fashion director of women's co-op made her the natural choice but at the time, nobody knew just how young she is.

In a recent profile on Into The Gloss, Ogura casually slipped it into conversation that she joined Barneys as an assistant in the fashion office straight after graduation from university in 2005. Yes, you read that correctly, 2005 making her only 29. So just in case you happened to be feeling like a bit slacker already, that might make you feel that extra bit worse. But aside from that, her relative youth may work in her favour. Talking to the NY Times recently, Brooks was frank in saying that the demanding nature of the job was too much, especially with having children, so for that reason, it might work out pretty well.

Barneys Announce Amanda Brooks' Replacement

Amanda Brooks and Tomoko Ogura

Today Barneys announced that Tomoko Ogura has been promoted to senior fashion director from her role former role as the fashion director of women's Co-op.

The company have tried to avoid labelling Ogura as Amanda Brooks' replacement but it's pretty clear that she is despite the fact that her title doesn't include 'vice-president' as Brooks' did. Like her predecessor, Ogura will report to Daniella Vitale, chief merchant and executive vice-president at Barneys. Considering that Ogura has worked at the company for the past seven years, her appointment seems to make sense and has come as huge surprise.
